Why Goals Don't Work!

"Mention goal-setting to me one more time and I swear I will take a hostage!"

Have you ever felt this way after seeing an article on "goal-setting" or some remote mention of "the power of goal-setting?"

If you haven't, consider yourself lucky...you haven't been over-exposed to the idea. And if you do have some negative associations towards goals and goal-setting, don't worry...you are not the only one. You should know, however, that there is a serious danger in thinking this way. Goal-setting is one of the quickest and most powerful ways of getting what you really want if and only if you go about it the right way.

Goals are not worth the paper they're written on unless a specific set of steps are followed exactly! If just one of these important steps are missing, your goals will never turn into reality.

So, what are the secrets that can take a goal that's "only a dream" or sometimes just "a pathetic cry for help" and turn it into a "reality that you wake up to every day of your life?"

Well, before I show you how to create and achieve almost any goal that your mind can conceive, let me explain to you something of equal importance: why most goals don't work. As I discuss each of the "don'ts" with you, you will simultaneously get very clear on what the "do's" are. So, let's get to it!

Why Goals Don't Work

The process of setting goals (goal-setting) will produce results only if certain steps are followed precisely. Here's a list of what not to do:

  • Set Boring Goals: Most of us don't create goals that get us motivated and excited. If your goals don't push you forward, if they don't motivate and empower you to jump out of bed in the morning to start making things happen, you will never achieve your goals. Ask yourself, "Why Do I want to achieve this goal? How will it benefit? What will I gain by having this in my life?" Also, ask yourself this question, "What will I lose out on if I don't achieve my goals? What will it cost me in the future?"

You need to get very clear on exactly why you want to achieve your goals and what it will cost you if you don't do your best to make it happen.

  • Never Designing a Plan: The best way to get lost while driving is to not have specific directions to reaching your destination. The same is true for your goals. Most people never achieve their goals simply because they never design a plan of action to follow.

How will you go about achieving your goals? Get specific. Write down every little detail of your plan. If you don't have a clue, find out who you should talk to in order to get a clue? Which books, if any, should you read to learn where to begin? Find these answers no matter what it takes. Then, start using them right away. Don't waste another second.

Here's a way to speed this process up: Instead of doing all the research yourself and sometimes re-inventing the wheel, find someone who is already successfully doing what you want to do, and then follow in his/her footsteps. In other words, find a coach. This method will really help you reach your goals quicker since you won't make as many mistakes...you will be learning from someone else's mistakes! So, if you goal is to make money and become financially independent, find someone who is already making a lot of money, and then find out what he or she is doing to make this money. And finally, start doing the same things yourself...start using the same techniques, inherit the same beliefs.

  • Not Setting A Deadline: Just like any other project that needs to get done, unless you set a deadline, it will never get done. When setting your goals, tell yourself exactly when you plan to accomplish your goal.

  • Not Taking Action: Creating goals is great. There is a lot of power unleashed during the goal-setting process. But creating them will not guarantee that you will achieve them unless you follow through! You have to do something every single day that will bring you one step closer to your goal. Most times you will need to repeat the same step, or a series of steps, everyday in order to reach your goals. If, for example, your goal is to become healthier by working with weights. You can't build bigger (or more toned) muscles by lifting weights for just one day. You have to workout with weights at least 2 to 4 times a week, every week, to see some significant results. If you're starting a business, you have to market your business, answer customers' questions, and process orders on a consistent basis. If you don't follow through, you have no right to say that "goals don't work!" Goals do work, but you have to work them!

  • Letting Boredom/Repetition Get the Best of You: No matter what you're doing, if it requires that you take certain basic steps regularly, there will be times when you get bored. When this happens, shift your focus from what you're doing to 'what you will accomplish in the end.' Focus consistently on what you will get out of it at the end. Focus on your outcome! Of course, this will only work if you have set goals that motivate and excite you whenever you think of them.

It is crucial that you understand this simple fact: To be successful at anything, you have to practice the fundamentals, the basics, every single day. A lot of people start searching for 'something new' to do. Don't get caught in this trap! If for example, your goal is to become a skater, you will not reach your goals by trying to learn new moves every day. The only way you will master skating (or any sport) is to master the basics. Your mind and your body has to be able to perform these basic moves with your eyes closed - almost as if they are part of your reflexes. That is the only way to master anything - by practicing the basics on a consistent basis. So don't get caught up in the "I want to learn soemthing new" trap! It's dangerous and it will cost you! Practice the basis regularly, and whenever you get bored, just start focusing on all the benefits you will gain when you have accomplished your goals!

  • Not Believing in Your Goals: Aside from choosing goals that excite you, you have to believe in these goals if you ever want to accomplish them. You have to believe in your heart, in your mind, and in your gut that you will accomplish your goals. Even when you're at your lowest emotionally, you have to remind yourself that you have the resources within yourself to make any goal of yours a reality. The fact of the matter is that you really do have this power inside you. Everyone does.

When you create a goal in your mind, when you have absolute faith in your goal, you will find a way to make it happen. Don't question this belief - it is a fact. Everything you've ever accomplished in your life started out as just an idea in your mind. Just look back at all your successes and accomplishments from the past and you will know this to be true.

You and I both know of people out there who make their dreams come true despite the challenges and hardships they have to endure. Most times, these are people who are much less fortunate and talented than you and I. So, stop wasting time. Stop doubting yourself and your abilities and start working on your goals and turn them into reality! Believe in yourself and your goals and you will have anything you want!

  • Letting Past Failures Affect Future Successes: Most of us dwell on our past failures, no matter how small they are, till the day we die. What's worse is, most of us don't even remember some of our great successes of the past. We just feel good about them when they happen and sometimes maybe another week longer and then they're forgotten -- unless of course it's a fishing tale, in which case the story always gets better.

Don't do that to yourself. You deserve more than that! Instead of dwelling on your past failures and mistakes, figure out what you've learned from them (or could learn from them) and put this new-found knowledge to use. You see, by making a mistake, you now know what not to do. So, create a new plan and put it to work. And if that doesn't work, you try another one! The secret to success truly comes down to one simple trait: never giving up.

Do you remember how you learned to ride a bike? Or learn to swim? Or drive a car? Or juggle? Or ski? Do you realize that you would have never learned to ride a bike if you had given up trying after the first time you fell off your bike? We make mistakes so we can learn from them, and in the future, we do things better. The more mistakes you make, the more you will learn from them and get better at what you're doing until you succeed! So, go for it! Make all the mistakes that you can and learn from them...and keep doing this until you succeed!

So, now that you know what not to do, you probably also know exactly what the steps are for turning any goal into a reality.

Let's quickly review them.

To create any goal from a dream into a reality, you need to:

  • Get clear on exactly what it is that you want. If it is money, decide how much you want. Write your goals down on paper. Get a notebook to write down all your goals in.

  • Get excited and motivated! Why do you want it? Find compelling reasons that drive you forward. How will you benefit from achieving these goals? Write them down. Also, write down what you will lose - what you will miss out on - if you don't do your best to achieve these goals.

  • Set a deadline. If you're serious about achieving your goals, decide by when you'd like to have your goals materialize. Write this deadline down.

  • Design a plan. Find out what you will need to do to achieve these goals. Who will you need to talk to, what books (if any) will you have to read? Who's ideas and techniques will you have to follow? Design a plan and follow it!

  • Have faith. Believe in your heart, have absolute faith that you will make it happen. This is one of the most important steps. When you truly believe in your heart that you will accomplish your goals, when you can visualize it in your mind, you will achieve them!

  • Cut through the memories of past failures and follow through. Decide that whatever happened in the past has nothing to do with now or the future. Take what you've learned from your past mistakes and do it better!

  • Review your goals every single day! Visualize yourself already achieving these goals and living the life that you want! Make it so real in your mind, that you feel as if you already have achieved these goals. Do this daily!

Then, take action. Do everything in your power to make it happen! Follow these steps and I guarantee you will be living your dreams!

To your success!

Sincerely,
